Re: 95 camaro, starter or ignition

Could be a VATS problem. If VATS does not recognize the chip in the key, starter will not engage, but other electrics will work.

A troubleshooting tip is to attempt to start one time, then restart a min 3 minutes later with the same key and engine should start. Should start. Try this event a couple times to make sure, about an hour apart.

If the above happens, a quick with an ohmmeter to the pair of white wires to the unplugged steering column connector reading up into the column. These two wires 'read' the key chip. No resistivity, bad socket in the key tumbler. It will need to be changed.

Dealer does this or you can, but steering wheel needs to come off to change tumbler after showing owership proof to a GM dealer for a new tumbler.

Re: 95 camaro, starter or ignition

any ideas why jumping w/screwdriver fixes short term. has happened twice in last week. today pouring rain school parkinglot 40 degrees outside. no fun. I have looked at process for replacing ignition online looks like major pain. have had wheel off before to replace turnsignal switch, no fun. we have had same problem with two keys. will replacing whole ign key assembly work or does original have to be fixed to match.

Re: 95 camaro, starter or ignition

MAy be the start relay has some resistance built across the contacts due to the current draw of the solenoid. I would replace the starter relay since it's easy and cheaper.
You have proved the starter works with the screwdriver.
