Car won't start :(

Alright so here's the story, firstly my car seems to have developed a stalling problem. When sitting still in neutral sometime the car just slows down and dies idk why this happens so I'm hoping someone can help
Me figure out why, secondly sometimes while moving even my car just shuts down, I was in the middle of a turn yesterday and my car shut off but I quickly restarted and continued the turn no problem. But this could be a major problem if it happened somewhere else more busy. And then lastly I was driving through the countryside yesterday and all of a sudden the car made a big bang/popping noise and black smoke came out the exhaust. I didnt know what had happened so I pulled over to the side and inspected the car everything SEEMED to be in place but when I tryed starting the car again it wouldnt start it wouldn't just click either the car is trying to start but won't and there's a smell of gasoline when trying that isn't usually there.

Please help. Any ideas??

Re: Car won't start :(

these modules are notorious for failure --some auto parts places can test them and i have my own tester--make sure el. lube and check cap see if center pin that goes to coil is wore down also check rotor and see if there is black spot under neath the rotor(mounting side)

Re: Car won't start :(

The top is worn down a bit and there is rust on the bottom but we couldn't see a way to take off the rotor to check underneath.

Re: Car won't start :(

check the distributor wiring for a bad wire, something may be shorting out. Check inside the dist for anything broken or cracked. if so replace. ALSO could be fuel or lack of, bad fuel pump? is it a electric fuel pump? could have short or be bad. Carb could be cloged up, check bowls. floats etc what kind of carb?

Re: Car won't start :(

If an EFI engine, it would have a TBI (throttle body injection) having two injectors, it could be a broken ECM coolant sensor, the one with two wires, or its connector having corrosion and connector needs to be pulled and either cleaned or replaced.

If carburetor equipped, could have a piece of foreign material between the needle and its seat inside keeping the needle open and allowing the bowl to overflow, the smell of raw gas.

Another reason why it won't start is te plugs are gas soaked. Remov ethem and either replace them if you can't remember when they were replaced last or dry them out after fixing the problem others have offered.

Re: Car won't start :(

The first thing that came to mind was the distributor but I wouldn't rule out any sensor either. I had a $6 windshield fluid washer sensor short out cause this same kind of problem. Took nearly 3 months and several hundred dollars to find.

Re: Car won't start :(

My car doesn't have a carb actually and it cant be fuel pump as it reaks of gas when we try to start it so it has to be pumping gas through yes?

Re: Car won't start :(

Yes, you have fuel, but do you have spark? At the right time - view with a timing light while cranking - no light, no spark?
