Question

ok, ive got a 79 berlinetta (v6) that wont pass smog. the guy i bought it from told me it needs a new carburator. it starts, and it runs, but thats pretty much it. i was taking out the center console and i found a little box under the dash that looks like it could be a computer(the part number on it is 16010284). im not sure what it is, and now we're wondering if the guy told us it was only the carburator just to get the car out of his hair. i dont even know if cars had computers this long ago. i looked in my dad's camaro book and it didnt cover the subject very well, so i thought i'd come here and see if i could get some info this way. so, if there's anybody that can help me out with this, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

You have posted your problem on a page that deals primarily with first-generation ('67,'68,'69) Camaros, but I will attempt to help you. I don't know much about the later model Camaros, so take what I tell you with a grain of salt. Are you sure you have a 79 Berlinetta? I was almost dead sure the Berlinettas didn't come out until sometime in the 80s. Anyone else know about this? I would definitely say you found a computer under the console. I think that is where they put the computers in the 80s cars. Some cars did have very primitive computer systems in them at that time (very late 70s), but i'm not sure about the Camaros. I know I wasn't that much help, but I hope I provided some info.

79's did not have computers. More electronics than first gens but computers started with third gens (later years). berlinetta started in 79 it replaced the LT.

The thing you found underthe dash is probally some type of electronic resistor/capacitor thing (does the car have elctric windows, power locks, air, etc. these options bring alot of black box things).

just thought of somthing else, in cali you must have all your emissions equiptment(smog pump ect), and i think the law says before you can sell a car you must get a emissions test, could be the sellers proplem to fix.
