I can't get my speedometer working on my 69 SS, Muncie M20. I've checked the cable by going under the car and spinning it with my fingers both in and out of speedo. Cable seems good and speedo moves when I do this. Tranny end has a red gear that seems as big as possible for the hole in tranny. When I put just the gear assembly part into tranny it seems to engage. My next step will be to jack up rear end and turn the driveshaft by hand to see if the little sguare is turning. Anybody have any other ideas? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you

It sounds as though the drive gear on the ouput shaft has come loose and freewheeling on the shaft.

There are two gears inside the tranny tailcone. The drive gear is kept from spinning on the tailshaft by a little clip under the gear that you can barely see - it fits in a slot in the inside of the gear. The driven gear is the one with the square hole in the end that fits the speedo cable.

If you spun the speedo cable and the needle moves then the problem is definately one of these two gears. You can pull the driven gear out and try to scope any damage with a flashlight.

To replace these gears, pull the driveshaft, then the tranny tail cone. I bet you'll find a stripped gear or the clip broken on the drive gear.
