Yesterday, I picked up an 85 Iroc with a swapped out LS1 350 block modified back to carb from fuel inj (go figure). This motor is Frankin Camaro, there is a tool handle plugging a vac line, lamp cord powering cooling fans, cut wires, etc... But the motor runs great with mods galore, and no leaks. (Yes, I will fix it all)
Here is my question:
700R4 will keep accelerating in overdrive (good), but will not kick down (only in over drive) for hard passes. Will manually shifting down a gear stress my tranny?
Is there an adjustment for the OD Modification?

Sounds like a mis-adjusted TV cable. What is "Franklin Camaro"? If I had to guess the term hacked together comes to mind. If that's so you need to drop the Camaro from the slang... The name doesn't deserve to be used in a demeaning saying. Kinda sounds like something that would be said in a Mustang pit...

Thats a tough one that thing had a veh speed sensor and may rely on electronics to kick down check at your library for a wiring diagram. Im sure you can work around it.
But it will take some homwork

The previous owner may have installed the B&M kit that allows for accelleration 3/4 or so past full throttle in O.D.

I always wanted that, but never got it.

"Frankin," as in Frankinstein. A big scary monster put togeter with after market parts that caused mahem and havoc on the streets.

The B&M kit was installed, but for a driver I am not sure I like it yet.

How bad is it to manually downshift in a 700r4 pre 1987, ie OD to D?

How'd he get a carb on an LS-1? Any trans used on that engine should have been the 4L60E which is electronically controlled through the computer for shift points, etc. There wouldn't be a T.V. cable.

Or was this the original trans from the IROC? Then you're back to the t.v. cable and governor. I'd still like to know how he got a carb on that engine (what manifold)?

The motor runs well, but looks like nightmare science project gone wrong. I bought this car cheap! The carb/intake looks like a summit package, I'll get numbers over the week end. I didn't think about the tranny in the iroc not being a 700r4, but from memory the pan has the 700r4 shape. The guy cut the injection lines and crimped them. The original iroc throttle mech has been replaced. The two gas lines are routed together through a regulator then to one tube on the carb. Every thing possible is electric, fans ect... plugged vac lines are everywhere.

I've never owned an automatic tran car.
Can I manually downshift from "OD" to "D" with out hurting the 700r4 (1985) tranny or locking the tires up.

Sure you can downshift from OD to D. I do it a lot when coming off a highway into town. I don't like it shifting in and out of OD around town, so I just pull it down to drive.

The kickdown cable on my TH-350 isn't even hooked up, so I manually downshift it all the time...it's no different to the tranny than the cable on a TH-350. On a 700, you need the cable for clutch pack tension. However, to answer your question, Robert is right...no harm in manually downshifting it.

i doubt very much that it is an LS1... if anyone was gonna put one of them in, i doubt if they would make a carb intake for it. perhaps he has it confused with something else?

1971 Nova(looks like 69 camaro from underneath!)
355sb, vortec heads, HOT cam,T-10 tranny, 3.70 gears 16X8" IROC wheels. 12" Corvette brakes on the way.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Just did fluids/ brakes/ interior/ re-wiring/ and degreased the motor.
I think I'll put a B&M shifter in.
I haven't found the block # yet, but for some wierd reason there is no rust on the block any where...

Arenít all LS1 block aluminum? Might explain why thereís no rust.
