On my 68, when I am starting it and letting it warm up a little, there is a gas smell. And after about 5 minutes of idling, there is a puddle where the exhaust exits, on the ground behind the rear wheels. I thought it might be the fuel/air mix, so I leaned it out, but it's still happening. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jacob

Hopefully its water vapor and not gas.

If it is truly gas, look for a blown power valve (assuming Holley carb), to high float levels, or internal leakage. If it's gas, get it fixed quickly because your washing the oil off the cylinder walls with the gas, which will rapidly destroy your rings ability to seal.

Are you sure its really gasoline that is making its way the entire length of the exhaust system and dripping out your tail pipes???
Could it be condensation, blowing out of the exhaust (which would stop in a few minutes) and the gas smell is coming from somewhere else?

I would be VERY shocked if it is actually gas running out of the tail pipe (it is just water, I would guess). If it was that rich the car wouldn't even run. Does it burn your eyes, like rich exhaust or does it smell like raw (liquid) gas. Where is your gas tank vented? Does it only do it in the morning and go away after you drive for a while? Does it do it more or less when the tank is full?

Sorry it took so long. I went out of town for a while. Anyways, it is condensation that is making the puddles. whew! But I can't figure out where the gas smell is coming from. There's no leak in the fuel line or the gas tank, the idle mixture is WAY lean, and the gas cap is securely shut. I'm not sure where it is. Thanks again for all you help.

Most likely its the vapors from the vented cap that you smell. If I let mine sit for a while <always does> and finally get to take her out, when I get to the rear of the Camaro to open the garage door, you can smell gas fumes, and the cars not running.

Thanks, Doug. Hey, where's Harford? Is it close to Annapolis? And do you know where any tracks are around here? I'm aching to give it a try.
