A FRIEND OF MINE HAS A 92 Z-28 THAT HE BOUGHT AS A ROLLING CHASIS.HE INSTALLED A CARBURATED 350 WITH A 700R4 TRANS FROM AN 85 IROC. THE TRANS WAS WORKING FINE BUT NOW WILL NOT CHANGE GEARS. WHEN YOU FIRST PUT IT IN GEAR IT GOES IN HARD BUT DOESN'T SHIFT OUT OF FIRST. IT ALSO GAVE NO WARNING, IT WAS SHIFTING FINE THEN 4 HOURS LATER , NOTHING. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

It is really easy to get the least amount of dirt or something in the cooler line when they are off changing the engine. This goes to the governor, and no up shifts.

To clean it knock the round cover off that is near the rear of the tranny, there you will find the gov. If the gear is not broken hold it up by the gear. Move wings at the bottom of the gov back and forth, while doing this look in the slots in the shaft to see if the inner piston is moving. If the piston don't move spray carb cleaner into the slots, and tap the gov against the gear, respray then tap it against the other end. Repeat this until it frees up and moves by holding it by the gear, and moving the wings. Be gentle, and patient.

If the gov is not stuck it will be the TV inside the valve body. If this is the prob, wing it up fairly hard, and as you lift off the gas have it in low, and make a manual shift to second. Do this in 3rd, and on up until you get it in high and get going about 70, turn off the key, slam the acc pedal as hard as you can ten times then be sure to hold it on the floor to turn the key back on. I know this sounds dumb, but if you want to unstick the TV w/o taking the VB off try it.
