About a week ago, I was driving my 85 camaro and all of a sudden, my tranny gave out. It didn't give out per say, but it only stays in first gear. Well it is an automatic trans., so I went to talk to a guy and he said to check a vacum line to the tranny, but I didn't see one when I looked. So what do I do, do i need a new tranny or What?

Auto-trannies are tricky. My 85 V6 tranny would clunk and shake my center console so bad that quarters flew out of my ashtray i took it to a place to have them look at it they usually charge $60 bucks to look at it but the guy at my place did it for free knowing he would get my business but my engine blew the second time I took it in so i never got it fixed. Have a professional look at it their are lots of things that could go wrong the only thing you can do is check the amount and condition of fluid. Which should be at the right level on dipstick and red colored.

Well I went to see a guy about the transmission, and he told me that it might be the governor that is stuck and not letting the transmission shift gears. What is the governor and where is it, so maybe I can look at it myself.

Does sound like the governor. Round cover on the side of the trans. Not a good project for a do it yourself. Most trans shops will install a good used one fairly reasonable.

Thanks guys, I took it to a tranny shop, and the guy there told me that my bell housing was dirty or stuck or something like that. he fixed it for me, and now it seems to be doing fine.
