1996 z28 wont start

Recently my 96 z28 started acting up. I first noticed it when I started it up one day and it immediately stalled.I fired it back up and it ran problem free for weeks.About 2 weeks later it stalled on me while driving,I cranked and cranked and cranked until it finally started.when it finally started the tach wasnt working but the car drove fine,it didn't miss or anything.I drove it home and shut it off.Since then it will start from time to time and run fine, other than the tach but after running for 15-30 min it wont start back. Its baffling me that it runs fine when I can manage to get it started and then suddenly it just will not start. If anyone has any ideas of what it might be please help.

P0372 does appear to be missing pulses.

Re: 1996 z28 wont start

Still no luck.I ran the battery dead trying to start it repeatedly so I was in need of a new one.I went and got a new battery put it in and the car started up immediately. The service light went off and the tach worked everything was fine.About 3 days after that i was driving and the car surged for a split second and the tach dropped to 0rpm and the service light came on.It ran fine despite that.Ever since then it will start but I have to turn it over for about 15-20 sec.Once it starts it seems to run okay,it doesnt seem to miss badly or anything but the service light is on and the tach doesnt work.Somebody please help me! Also what controls the tach anyway. Some people say the opti others say the cps, which is it?

Borrow an OBDII code reader from your local auto parts store, Advance Auto does it and read the diagnostic codes stored.
Also, buy a battery charger and charge the battery.
The length/time of the trips in the three days driving was how long, on the average?

It has a brand new battery. I drove on the road an avg of about 15-20 min and it sat parked and idled another 15min.I could have went longer but I did'nt want to get to far from the house.

Next time SES comes on, Service Engine Soon, copy down the codes.
This action will give an idea where to look for the problem.
