Highbeams kill my fuel gauge

Every time I turn on the on the headlights or parking lights in my 68 convert I get them but I also loose my fuel gauge. If im at a full tank it will drop to around half and anything below that will drop the needle to past empty. Its a standard dash with no other gauges but the speedo. thanks

Re: Highbeams kill my fuel gauge

sounds like a ground gone bad or a bad printed circuit.

Re: Highbeams kill my fuel gauge

Is the center screw at the top of the gauge housing that mounts it to the dash? Check and see if it's missing and/or loose or the ground that goes there may not be connected?

While your at it, you could pull the dimmer switch and see if dirt and moisture is causing some voltage to go to ground.

Re: Highbeams kill my fuel gauge

Thanks guys I'll try the center screw first and the printed circuit last.

BINGO bad ground. The tab that dose the grounding was not doing its job but all seems well now. Thanks.
