I got a 79 trans am with the 6.6 liter/olds 403 stock. Ever since I done the timing chain and gears in it, it started pinging. The only way I can get it to stop, is to retard the timing, but then I lose power. I have checked the vacum advance on the dist. The timing is set correct.I run 92 octain feul. The car has dual exhaust. I ever removed the fan and ran an electric to help reduce power lose. And so far nothing has helped. The only other thing that has helped was a can of NOS octain booster. Any help or info would be well taken...thank you.

THE CAR COULD HAVE JUMPED TIMEING (THE CHAIN SLIPPED) AND THE TIMING WAS RESET TO WORK THAT WAY.ID DOUBLE CHECK THE DISTRIBUTOR IS TIMED RIGHT IE.. #1CYL AT TDC ECT.THAN ID SAY TO CHECK THAT THE GEARS AND CHAIN ARE CORRECT.HOPE THAT HELPS.

What you have done is to restore the cylinder pressure to what it should have been with the cam retarded { loose chain } you lost alot of low speed cylinder pressure and you made up for it by advancing the timing you cant do that now. One other thing I don't know if the Olds used a smog timing set like some cars but if you put a non smog one on it will cause the problems you are having all you can do then is retard the timing until it quits pinging It will still run better than before

Olds engines are extremly sensitive to egr...way more so than any engine a I have ever seen. Verify that the egr valve is working properly...if so, then remove it and check for carbon deposits in the egr port in the intake manifold. I recently sold a olds delta 88 with a q-jet 307 and it pinged no matter what pump gas you put in it...tuneup, timing, etc made no difference. I got the egr info from and olds website, and it worked for me.
