I have a 1980 350 block that was claimed to be rebuilt when I bought a 67 Camaro last winter. It's using oil in as little as 100 miles, about a half quart, barely visible smoke on deaccelration, but oil fouling the plugs bad. Ran compression test and got 180 to 200 on all cylinders. Put oil in the cylinders and reading stayed the same. Is this a sure sign of bad valve seals or valve guides? Is this a positive indication of bad valves? or could the rings be bad too? This motor runs strong! I was surprised how fouled the plugs were, only knew they were fouled because I pulled one out, it did not affect the performance of the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The good compression and visible smoke on decelleration tells me your valve seals and / or guides are shot. You can change the seals pretty easily, just remove the valve covers and rocker arms. Sears sells a spring compressor that works from on top, bolts to the rocker stud, use the old rope in the spark plug hole trick to keep the valves from falling into the cylinders. put new seals on and cross your fingers.

Thanks for the info. I think the heads are dated 1976, so I was kind of thinking both the guides and seals are tired. Would the new seals alone be enough to stop the oil use?

Rope in the cylinder works but, if you have access to an air compresor get an adapter to pressurize your cylinder that you are working on. Its much quicker and less hassel. Have a magnet ready (refrigerator magnet will work) and place over any of the oil passages incase you drop any of the keepers that hold the spring/valve assembly together. Keeper falling in through the head makes for some major problems and more work to take off the intake and possibly the oil pan.

Thanks for the tips. I bought the fitting to pressurize the cylinder with an air compressor, it worked like a charm. Also bought the spring compressor to do the job. I changed both the umbrella seals over the valve guides and the O rings, ran it last night, felt and sounded better. All the O rings were broken or missing so I hope this cures my problem....Thanks again....
