My car is all stock with 30,000 miles. Engine blows blue smoke at startup "only". The engine does not burn any oil during normal operation. I have been told at the dealership that the oil stem seals on the valves need to be replaced. They believe that driving the vehicle less than 3,000 miles a year and then storing it in the winters cracked one or more of the seals. Is this right?

It sure sounds like valve guide seals. I don't know about you not driving it enough story but they will crack with age.

I had a 350 TPI in a 88 IROC it did the same thing. It was the valve seals. Get them fixed and the problems will go away

When you have the seal installed specifie the umbrella cap style seals. The factory type seals are junk.

Yeah, if the engine is fairly new like that, get them replaced. Otherwise, if you couldn't be bothered with fixing an older engine with the same problem, it is no big deal. Most of my engines had this problem. All that happens is a minute amount of oil trickles into the cylinders along the valve stem. It happens when the engine is off and oil has time to settle. A quick blue puff is expected on startup and then you are okay to drive. Your engine has low miles, so go for it and get them swapped. Also, engine oil that is older than about 3 months can become acidic and deteriorate soft parts. Even when your car is in storage, start it up every so often to keep everything lubed, and change the oil after every 3 months or so.

My 88 IROC got a bad valve guide seal too. It happened as I was driving along a windy road. All of a sudden - POOF - Huge cloud of smoke in the rearview, for about a mile. Then it stopped, never to smoke again. But a hi-po chip would never work right, it always pinged, I think it had too much carbon deposit in one cylinder. And when the dealer fixed a leaky manifold gasket, under the extended warranty, they said the valve guide seal was bad, and fixed that then too. Anyway, a puff of smoke on startup is almost always bad valve guides, or valve guide seals.

You guys are good. I'll get the valve seals replaced with the umbrella type seals. Now you can help me find a good performance muffler system that is not too loud and one that does not have heat problems.
