i recently put a rebuilt 327 in my car. a lot of black powdery substance comes out the tail pipes everytime i start the car or rev the engine. i also am losing about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. i've put between 2-3k miles on it so far. there is also a little oil on the plugs when i pull them out. can anyone tell me what's going on here? should i take the engine back? it runs really good, but these are things i wouldn't expect from a fresh engine. then again, i'm pretty green at this.

Joe,
i'm not leaking any oil from the intake, as far as the heads, they are double hump heads that came on the engine when i bought it as a long block.

I had the same problem when I first got my 327 two years ago. When I replaced the intake, carb and headers the problem went away. I think my original intake caused the black gunk at startup it was caked.
If your burning oil you would see white smoke at full throttle.

Try some engine restore in your oil, and 20 w50 synthetic. This oil is thicker.

Also, did you break in the engine properly?
Do a search on this site.

Don't put oil additives like engine restore in a brand new motor!!! In fact, you should never put that trash in anything!

If it was broken in properly and you are using a quart every 1000 miles, something is very wrong with the engine!!!

Bring it back to the shop that installed it and have it looked at.
