Question

Is changing the front seal on a Camaro Posi rearend a difficult task? Can it be changed without removing the back cover?

You should be able to unbolt the driveshaft at the rear and then take off the big nut on the pinion yoke. The yoke just slides out to get at the seal. Mark the yoke so you install it in the same position. Be very careful prying out the old seal and tapping the new one in.

Usually the seal will not look bottomed out when looking at the outside. Do not continue to pound it in or you will distort the seal.

They usually have 1/8" or a little more clearance on the outside seal flange to nose of the casting.
Lube the seal where it contacts the yoke or the seal may be damaged before oil get's to it.
