If it's not one thing it's another. I got everything working except for the fuel gauge. IT worked before resto on the car but now the needle sets at the 3 o'clock position when the car is running.It moves to the 1 o'clock position when the car is off.I have made sure i have a good ground and the sender wire is connected.The sender wire is spliced but it is a good connection ,could this be a problem?Any help will be greatly appreciated,as i am tired of guessing how much fuel i have before i'm walking. A good spliced connection won't hurt anything. See if the problem is caused by the sender or the gage.
Disconnect the sender wire from the sender.
The gage should go full.
Ground the sender wire to a good clean ground.
The gage should go empty.

OK John, undid fuel send wire ,guage stayed at 2 o'clock. Grounded fuel send wire and the gauge went to empty.Does this mean the fuel sending unit is bad?

Isn't there a resister type gizmo (highly technical term) like a ballast resister on the back of the fuel gauge itself? I've read here that it can be replaced with almost any same type that you can scam from a junkyard.
Make sure the gauge itself is grounded well.

Thinks Joe but there is know risitor on a 68. the wire goes from the sending unit to a plug that plugs into the back of the gauges.Anyway just need to know what the test i did on the previous post means does it mean the sender is bad or the gauge?

Problem sounds like it's in the area of the gage. Opening the sender line should have sent the gage to full+. Yes, there is a resistor attached to back of the gage, but guessing it doesn't sound like that. Double check that the gage is getting 12 volts and a good ground.

When you said the needle didn't return all the way to full makes me think it's the gauge too. Check the dash.

if the gauge returned to empty when you grounded the sender wire before the sender, i think that's a sign of a bad ground. i had the same problem. i decided to buy a new sender since they're pretty cheap and my sender/ground wire were in pretty bad shape. i had also already put in a new gas tank, that's when my problems started. i should have changed the sender when i changed the tank. good luck, those fuel gauge problems will drive you nuts.

Thanks guy's but when i said that i undid the sender wire and the guage stayed at 2 o'clock,that is alittle past full.then i grounded the wire and the gauge went to empty.Also i have a complete painless wireing harness thruout the car that might be why i don't have any kind of risitor behind my gauges,the sender wire simply terminates in a plug with all the other wires and then they all plug in to the back of the speedo on the circuit board.Anyway droped the fuel tank after work today and changed out the sending unit.hooked everything back up turned the key to the on position and HOT DANG IT WORKS!I now can have the peice of mind of knowing how much fuel i have before i run out.Thanks guys couldn't have figured it out with out ya'll.
