Question

Hey,

I have a pretty basic '68 Sport Coupe (327, accel dual point, holley 4 barrel, powerglide) that I've recently been experiencing some problems with. It was running fine until the other night. I was driving home from work when it started running rough. It deteriorated pretty quickly until it was undriveable. The engine just surges. It will start up fine, but it won't idle and soon backfires pretty severely. I swapped the carb and the coil, but this had zero effect. A glance under the valve covers revealed nothing amiss, and the points, etc. under the distributor cap look fine. The oil looks fine. Anyone got any suggestions?

This is a shot in the dark. You said the oil looks fine. Does it smell like gas? The diaphram in a mechanical fuel pump can go bad and gas will get into the oil. You'll have some of the problems listed. If you have a mechanical pump, do you know how old it is?

A cracked distribur cap will cause this type of problem. How old is the timing chain and gears? Its possible the chain is worn and the motor jumped out of time. Bring the motor up on TDC on the compression stroke and see if the distributor rotor is facing #1.

Thumbs up

Hey thanks for the quick replies guys. WT, I went and had a quick glance at the distributor cap as you suggested and noticed that the leads from the points were lose! I tightened things up, and voila, it was fixed. I'm back on the road.
