HI

i have a problem which drive me crazy

I just changed my starting motor on my 69RS 350, now the starter turn over perfectly when cold but when hot soemtime (i noticed it's not doing it everytime) when i trun the ignition key the starting motor doesn't want to turn, no noise nothing.

i checked all the connection evrything look OK.

My SECOND problem is:

just had some igintion part change (point condenser, psarking plug), now the car run perfectly (better than before) but soemtime (look like when i restart with a hot engine) the car run baddly a slwo speed (like if something tried to keep it from runing). when i just start the engine and stay parked, the tacho (and engine noise off course) doesn't stay at the same level and go up and down and soemtime stop.

i don't know if my explaination are clear, but i just start doing mechanics on my car and it's dificult to explain.

thanx for helping me

JL, I can't speculate on the second part of your'e question, but I maybe can help you on the first part. Many muscle cars of the late 60's had this problem. It was related to "heat soaking" you're starter/solenoid. Usually because the header collector was either too close to the starter/solenoid, or mods made to the car had resulted in more heat/less cooling to that area. I'll bet you're car starts fine after it cools off a bit.

If this is the case, the easiest, cheapest way to probably fix it is with a starter insulation blanket:

There is also a two-ply aluminum shield that attaches with a couple of existing bolts on the start and solenoid. I like it because it gets lots of air flow around it and isn't likly to retain moisture which could lead to rust or other problems with connections etc.

There's a topic in the "Engine" forum concerning
an eratic idle. The prognosis is that the mechanical advance is screwed up. Maybe weak springs. Put a timing light on it and see if its eratic. As for not starting when hot, I once had
this problem and after a while I discovered that
a corroded wire gave out when hot but worked OK when cold. Others suggest a remote solenoid. You may want to try a new solenoid.

Thanx for everything, will check the other topic.

One more thing:

I drove the car yesterday after few new setting on the carburator (edelbrock 750 with edelbrock manifold), i went to a car show on my way to go the car was friving nearly perfectly but getting weird when the engine get hot but on my way back even cold the engine was weird, looked like if something was retaining the engine to go (not enought gas or ignition) and it got worst when the engine was hot, stopped at the traffic light the RPM was moving from 600 to 850 up and down, the engine even stop once, when i want to start fron a traffic light i have to give a lot of power otherwise the engine stop.

this drive me mad, few people looked at my car (even a corvette specialist) but nothing change, look like the setting is always moving (unfortunatly it is rarely good.....

can someone tell me what to check or do

thanx for all your help

Hey, welcome to the board. When you changed the points, condensor, etc. did you, or your mechanic, set the points correctly? With your unstable idle it makes me think vacuum leak of some sort. Have you checked? An easy way to check is to spray WD40 or some other liquid around the intake, carb, etc and see if the idle spikes. If it does, there is your leak. With the "heat soak" problem, well, I had it too and picked up a ThermoTec starter blanket and worked perfectly. Good luck and by the way, we want to see pics of your car
