As long as everyone is diagnosing knocks, I have a rebuilt 454 with about 2000 miles on it and shortly after it warms up I start hearing a dull, singular knock sound and it occurs about once every 45 seconds on average. Don't hear it while driving or under any load, just at idle. Checked the flexplate, and the total timing is right on. It started doing this at about 500 miles. Someone told me it could be a loose valve guide. What do you guys think? I've also sounded the fuel pump area as well as other areas on the engine...can't seem to pick it up. The motor runs great otherwise...but this noise is messing with my mind....

Does it have a hydraulic cam?

It might be that one lifter pumps down a bit every so often. I have found that the quality of most hydraulic lifters is suspect when used in hi-perf applications.

Yes it does have hydraulic lifters. If your hunch is correct...what is the mechanism for developing the knock sound...and do you think this is going to cause any cam lobe damage. Appreciate your feedback....
