Thanks to all the techies and moderators like Bill who take the time to respond to our questions and impart their vast knowledge and experience on our behalf. Thanks Guys!!!! Now for next stumper. Having just rebuilt a 350 I prpepped for initila startup by first prelubing and presetting the valves (hyd). Started right up but the valves clattered (all) and would not quiet down. Radjusted with engine off 3 times with no improvement. Adjusted twice while running again no change. Checked pushrods for length and rocker arms, both are correct. By turning the adj nut in 1/8 turn increments I was able to completely bottom the nut on the stud and the valves still clattered. Engine ran fine. Everything is oiling fine through the pushrod. The lifters came as part of a shortblock kit and I assumed they were correct as they were the correct diameter. The oil groove must also be ok as they oil prpperly so I am stumped. Could I have been slipped some Rhoades Lifters by mistake as they all clatter like solids? Or are they the wrong ones (maybe pontiac)? And I am positive they are hydraulic lifters no matter which ones they are. Anybody have any ideas? All I can think to do is pulll them and compare with what I know is correct.

How many turns past "0" lash were you able to turn the nut down? To bottom out the stud it should have been far enough down to cause the engine to quit running; holding the valves open, etc. unless the lifters won't hold any pressure. I've never seen what you describe. There are a few things which could cause the noise but being able to bottom out the nuts and still have the engine run throws me. It seems as if some part(s) are definitely not correct.

Camcojb, Thats exactly what I thought. Everything visible is the correct part or dimension, i.e rocker studs, springs, pushrods etc. I can only think the lifters in there have more travel in the plunger bore than I can make up with adjustment. I guess I'm stuck with pulling the lifters. Thanks for the help.

This is going to sound stupid, but are the lifters getting oil ? Is oil coming out of the pushrods ? Had to ask just to be sure, other than that I can't think of anything right off hand, other than a defective batch of lifters.

Billk, Here's what I'm thinking and going to try. 1st Everything is oiling as it should. Prior to installing the lifters I soaked (submersed) them in oil. I may have caused a pump up condition, not sure. I removed the lifters and disassembled one to clean all the oil out. I put it back in its bore and installed the rocker. I was able to turn down the adj. nut until it bottomed on the stud and still ahd approx 1/8 inch plunger travel remaining. Next I replaced the rocker nut with one from my 69 Z/28. It was somewhat concave on the bottom as the ones I was using were flat. With this nit I was able to bottom thje plunger and begin to open the valve before it bottomed on the stud. Next I used an old poly lock I had and was able to get into the valve as much as I wanted. Now what I'm going to do, as I really don't belive all my lifters are defective is to remove them all, disassemble, clean and replace them. No pre-oiling/ soaking in lube. I will adjust the valves to 0 lash then one turn down, reassemble the top end, pre-lube with my distributor tool and fire it up. I hope like heck this will fix er. Do you think the pre-soak of the lifters might have attributed to the problem along with the flat bottomed nuts? Still, I can't help believe the lifters should have stopped clacking well before I got an 1/8" from the bottom of the plunger travel. Well, we'll see waht happens with this.
