my fuel gauge is acting wierd, it shows full all the time but now and the int fluctuates. how can i bench test the gauge?

It sounds like there may be a ground problem somewhere. Check the ground lead to the guage and the one near the tank. What year is your car? Check out this link. It was explained well by Mark C.

If you detach the lead that goes to the sending unit through the trunk floor, your guage should go to empty. It is located just in front of the filler neck inside trunk. If it does, that will at least tell you your needle works. I'm no electrician, just speaking of experience with mine. On mine, it was the ground near the right front of the tank.

Had the same problem with my Sport-comp gauge. Make sure you are well grounded and you have a good connection to your sending unit and you should be fine.
