Chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

just installed new head gaskets on my 400 (actually 406)
adjusted the valve using the below procedure (spinning pushrod between fingers till there is resistance then 1/2 turn in.
Intake Valve Adjustment:
■with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
■with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
■with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
■with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
■with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
■with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
■with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
■with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve
Exhaust Valve Adjustment:
■with #1 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Exhaust Valve
■with #8 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Exhaust Valve
■with #4 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Exhaust Valve
■with #3 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Exhaust Valve
■with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
■with #5 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Exhaust Valve
■with #7 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Exhaust Valve
■with #2 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Exhaust Valve
I also rebuilt the carb and had a stripped bowl screw so I used a new PROFORM main body.
car starts up great and idles great with no vacum leaks and pulling 18" of vacum.
timing set and works properly.
when I put in gear and give it gas it falls flat and rpm doesnt increase?
float level was checked etc.
any ideas

Re: chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

I could never get the hang of going by pushrod feel. They will actually spin with little resistance sometimes when the lifter is past zero lash, then you get too much on them. What works for me is use a 0.005" feeler gauge between the valve tip and rocker, turn down the nut while sliding the gauge in and out until it just drags a little, then go a quarter turn or so.

Re: chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

Did you check the accel pump in the carb to see if it squirts gas as soon as you open the throttle. If your valves were out that much, I think you would notice it in the idle. How's the timing? Just some thoughts.

Re: chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

I use the EOIC (exhaust opening intake closing) method - when exhaust is just opening adjust the intake, when the intake is closing adjust the exhaust. With poly locks its easy - no need to feel the pushrod, just spin down the lock with your fingers until it hits then add a half turn and lock it.

That said, you have great vacuum so you don't have a big overlap cam so your method should be fine - it's not your valve adjustment causing problem, probably timing or the carb - I'm going to guess carb since you said timing was set and the carb is new to you, and probably the accelerator pump needs adjusted.

Try blowing it out with compressed air, that carb should work good

there is a big void after the hole.

Re: Chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

does the EOIC method as well as Harry's method in the first post both work for adjusting valves with a longer duration cam in the neighborhood of 248/254 degrees at .050? If not what is a better method? I have some hearing loss and listening for valve clatter is not so easy for me?

You're welcome, RJ
Exhaust begins to open, adjust intake.
Intake almost fully closed, adjust exhaust.
You can follow firing order and do it it in two crankshaft turns.

Re: Chevy valve adjustment? car wont go under load

gonna do it today. I have those Comp Short Travel hydraulic roller lifters, and Comp says there is only .012" of travel in them to begin with, and mine are noisier than heck, when Comp says the are pretty quiet when adjusted right. I like them as far as easy revs to 6500, but adjusting them seems not so easy
