I'm a little late to help you on this one but I ALWAYS check bearings when pan is off. Might not be the problem but only adds 30 minutes to repair time and can catch a problem before catastrophic failure. Is this a high mileage engine? Have you tried heavier weight oil?

change your oil to 20-50 for a v8 40 for a V6 and to either engine add 1 quart lucas oil stabilizer or even 2 quarts, but keep level at 5 quarts trust me it will help.
