What wire and the circuit the wire is in?
Sometimes backfire through carb is incorrect timing - too retarded, sticking intake valve.

Re: engine backfires thru the carb

I would start with easiest first: verify the distributor wires are on the right spark plugs. I've seen this issue even stump the seasoned mechanic.

The firing order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.
1,3,5,7 is on the left bank (driver side) and 2,4,6,8 is on the right bank. The distributor rotates clockwise, so find plug wire #1 and go from there.

Re: engine backfires thru the carb

Back fire through the carb indicates an intake valve being open when a plug fires... If you don't have a couple plug wires swapped and your timing isn't all out of wack check your valve adjustment and from there start looking for a bent intake valve...

Re: engine backfires thru the carb

Can also be a lean backfire caused by a weak/failing accelator pump.
