i have a 1978 camaro 454 30 over with brodix bb2x heads and a powerglide 1:76 and what rear end gears would be best? the rear end is a 9 inch ford and i dont have any gears yet.the stall is 4000 the cam is a roller 3500-7800 and if i need a differnt stall i can get one.where not done with the car it hasnt been out of the grage.

the person at the trany shop said the powerglide with the 1:76 gears would be the best for my car becouse of the bbc and the weight of the car.

It depends on what you are going to do with the car,street and strip,or strip only,or what,let us know.

James,

If you want run slicks when you go to the strip go with 4:56 gears,street ability limited.

If you want to use a little more on the street and feather it out of the hole with street tires at the strip go with 4:11's,a little more streetable.

To be even more streetable go with 3:73's and by the way with 4000 stall and a big block you will have enough torque to still launch well at the strip.

If you want the best of both worlds go with a well built 700R4, 3:55 gears and a 22/2500 stall.

Figure this;
700R4 Low gear = 3:06x3:55=10:86 Low
700R4 4/TH,O.D.= 28 %x3:55=2:56 Final

Glide 1:68 Low x 3:55=5:96 Low
Glide 1:1 High x 3:55=3:55, With a slipping TQ converter unless you are turning over 4000. If the RPM is less than 4000 at high way speed there is a lot of heat created in your trans,and this is the # 1 enemy to any trans.

Here is my opinion,the glide is good for all out drag racing with electronics,and trans brake.Also big slicks,4:56 or 5:13 gears and put her on the trailer to go home.

I feel that 4000 stall is to much for the street.

The 700R4 has a good low gear for 3:55's and the B.B.engine. The up side here is you can run even lower gears,but it will most likely slow your car down because of tire spin,and with the 3:55's it will turn about 1800 @ 70 MPH.

what if i use a 3500 stall?i going to run 28-10 1/2-15 tires and i dont want to get beet by 5.0s or 350 camaro that run 13`s

Hey James,
The best way to get the stall right is since you already have the 4000 in the car decide what gears you are going to run and then get it on the high way and see what RPM it runs at 65 or so and get your stall just below that RPM. Consider that you may have to feather it some because the stall may affect this test because it is so high.

And James it's no disgrace for a small block,Ford or Chevy to beat you off the line.What is so neat about a big block is to blow by whoever just before they finish,and make them look like they just tied off to a stump.
