Allmost Every time I try to start my 69 Camaro I get a click noise. After one or two trys the starter aligns correclty and I can start the car.

I am assuming that I need to shim the starter.

How do I shim the starter?

How do I know what side to shim?

Do I use washers to shim it?

If you are getting just a "click" noise, it is not a starter shim problem. You may have a bad solenoid or cables. I would check them first. If the starter does try to engage the flywheel and you hear a grinding noise, or hear the starter spin, it my be a shim problem or starter drive problem. Autozone sells a shim kit in teh help section. They may also have several laying around from other starters.

Thank you. I will try replacing the solenoid tonight and check the cable. I will reply with the results.
