How do I tell if a lifter is bad? If the plunger doesn't move when you press on it with a rod, this is bad, yes? If this is so, then can I simply place a new set of lifters on a slightly used (<500 miles) cam?

Normally you dont just replace 1 lifter.unless they are solid lifters, they should move, the rocker isnt too tight causing it to bind is it?? if so kiss the cam lobes bye bye... if the rocker gives the lifter room to lift. then remember , they are hydrolic. so put some oil directly on it. an old trick we would do is fire the engine up with the valve cover off and the "rocker spurter covers" to prevent a hot oil bath, and pour oil down the pushrod and let it soak the lifter, in a minute or so it shut right up.. sometimes it works, sometimes it dont..
