Don't know if this proper way to test, but with the engine good and hot, shut the motor off, if the fan free wheels it would be time for a new clutch, with the enginge hot there should be slight drag of the fan blades when you turn them by hand, a cold engine and the baldes should spin freely,
Any body correct me if I am wrong,
What are your symptoms that you suspect the clutch fan, Is it overheating in traffic????
Could be the fan.
Is it overheating at high way speeds?????
Won't be the fan.

Rob, The car gets hot when I let it idle for a long time like 20-30 min.or so, like sitting in the driveway and the out side temp is 90 plus. If temp is 80 or so it cools fine ? The temp is ok driving.

I just bought a new fan/clutch set up today for my S/B 68. Carquest Auto Parts $81 for the both. Here it what it says on the box for testing: 1) With engine hot and ignition off, spin fan. 1 to 1-1/2 revolutions indicates a worn clutch. 2) Push the fan blade tip in and out. Looseness in the clutch shaft means bearing is worn. 3) Oily streaks on the hub shaft or fluid leaking at center of the thermostat spring. 4) Vibration can mean a worn bearing in the water pump of fan clutch. It generally makes good sense to replace both at the same time. (last one sounds like they want to sell more fans!!!) Hope that helps.
