I recently had a short block built for my 69 ss camaro, 350 4 bolt. the guy that put the bottom end together for me used a cloyes quiet drive gear drive. upon starting the engine for break in there was alot of noise coming from the timing chain cover, not your typical gear drive whine. upon removing the cover I do not see any marks where something may be rubbing other than where the idler pins make contact with the cover. upon closer inspection I noticed that with the engine on top dead center( front cylinder drivers side)the mark on tooth on the cam gear is facing up instead of on the bottom lineing up with the mark on the crank gear. the cam gear only goes on one way why on tdc wouldnt the mark be on the is a sig solid. pls help

Both marks up is TDC#1 so that's correct. They tell you to line the marks up to make sure the cam timing is correct, but what they don't tell you is in that position (top mark down, bottom up) that is TDC #6, not #1. When you turn the engine one full revolution you're at TDC#1 and both dots will be straight up.

If they told you to line them both straight up it would be very easy to have one of them off a tooth.
