Engine suddenly shuts off

I have a 1967 camaro, 327 V8, 275hp, automatic. The car starts up and idles fine but after several minutes it will almost stall while in park or neutral. When in drive it will suddenly shut off (intermintently). I checked the timing, carb orator is clean, changed the fuel filter and put a full tank of fresh gas but I still have the problem. Any other ideas of what would cause this? Fuel pump?

Re: Engine suddenly shuts off

Could be the fuel pump but the next time it quits get out of the car and manually pull back on the throttle linkage at the carb while looking into the carb to see if gas is squirting into the engine. Of course you will have to remove the air cleaner for this.

Do you still have the original ignition system in the car? If so you could try changing the coil-it is simple and cheap.

Re: Engine suddenly shuts off

As Mike said, but if you see fuel squirting from the acc. pump jets, pull the coil wire and check for spark at crank. If you get no spark, swap out the coil.

Need a bit more... Can you keep it alive (running) by pushing on the gas pedal a little (raising the engine rpm)? Does it do this when the car is moving or just when stopped?

Re: Engine suddenly shuts off

A stumbling shut off is more likely fuel related. A sudden shut off is spark related. As mentioned, fuel related issues check tank, lines, pump, carb, choke and filters. Spark, check coil connections, coil, battery to starter ,ignition switch, ignition wire to coil. Make up a 6 or 7 foot wire with alligator clips on both ends.Once it dies again, coil the wire around something round like a screw driver to create resistance, connect one end to the + battery terminal and the other to the + on the coil. Try and start and if it does, change your ignition switch. Autozone has them for under 10 bucks.
