have a 400 auto with trans brake and r-valve body
when i shift from 1st to second the trans locks up and brings the car to a dead stop.(at 80 MPH) it also is a 4000 stall it will start in 2nd an 3rd.
I think it may be between gears the shifter cable may not be working wright, but a friend thinks it may be the sprag gears not sure what to do? how to check it.

Checking the linkage adjustment would be the first place to start.

Could be the trans brake inadventently engaging reverse gear when in second(?). Check wiring for proper routing.

Tell us more! What shifter are you using? What rear gears? (I don't want to play down the lock up but any 3 series gear you would have had to be close to or above 8000 rpm in first to do 80 mph) I take it you were manually shifting and had the shifter lever in first and just shifted one notch to second. Just for clarity does it shif ok through all the gears when you put it in drive? If it does check into the trans brake. I don't think an automatic would lock up between gears and the shift linkage can't be that far out to go from 1st to reverse or park with one click of the shifter...

well took the pan off looks new, the fluid looks dark, no metal flaks at all(small silver gook) took off the trans brake too seems to be a little better. I will put new fluid in and filter too. but still when i shift into gear its like you have the brake on or going back into 1st gear.. could this be from low fluid?
