Question

I have the complete M.A.D electric trunk mounted system that works great, but the mini starter only starts, but does not engage the starter. It did bump over one time, but nothing since then. I only hear i click at the trunk mounted solinoid.
This happened before I installed the MAD system. All lights work. All cables are soldered with correct hookups. Battery is new 950 cold cranking power.
I think the starter New) is bad. I've had it checked out & it works fine, on the bench, but not on the car.
How do you tell if the starter is indeed, bad?
By the way , the engine is new & has never been started.

Dan;

I'm assuming that the MAD "electric trunk mounted system" uses a Ford solenoid to power the starter. If this isn't the case, read no further!

This is rather brutal, but here is what I'd recommend you try. Make sure the car is in neutral! Take one end of a jumper cable (just one of the two cables) and hook it up to one side of the ford solenoid (making sure that the other end of the cable isn't touching the car body). Put a large screw driver in the other end of the jumper cable and use it to touch the nut on the other side of the solenoid. Expect sparks as you bypass the solenoid. If your engine cranks over, there is something wrong with the MAD solenoid.

I just had the starter checked and it works fine.
I believe I just need to shim it properly. I have not used shims and the cog might be going past the flywheel. Is that possiable ?
The distance between the starter cog and the flywheel is only about 1/8 of an inch before it turns over.
I have to figure out how to shim the starter and where.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Dan

Dan,
Did you put the "jumper plate" (or a piece of wire) from the original Soleniod to the Batt terminal on the starter? If not this will cause the starter to spin but not give the soleniod power to kick out the bendix gear. Mark's kit comes with a small plate (to be used with stock starters) but if you have a mini starter or other aftermarket starter you will have to make you own. I just use a 10 ga wire and two ring terinals.

Tony,
I did make a jumper wire & it works.
I'm going out right now & put the starter back on the block to see what happens.
Thanks, Dan

Angry

Going crazy.
I hooked up the starter & had the wife bump over the ignition with me laying under the car.
The starter is getting power, but not kicking the cog to the flywheel. It just spins without engaging the flywheel.
Also I noticed the coil is very hot to the touch. What's up with that?
The battery is still strong & all other electrical parts work fine. Stumped, again.

Wink

Update on my starter problem.
Never, never assume anything when working with wiring.
I knew I had done everything correctly, but with my lack of experience, I didn't trust my work. I assumed (I know) because the battery was brand new that it just could not be a problem, but it was. I recharged the --- thing and low and behold we have an engaged starter to flywheel. It's the simple things that cause the largest problems because of ignorance. It won't happen again.
Thanks to all you guys for your insight and help.
Dan
