Starter Problems

What would cause a starter (Powermaster XS torque series) to work fine while bench testing and not work once it is mounted to the car? The starter worked fine prior to removal and now only intermitently works. It seems like the bendex is not coming out all the way but it is not hitting the fly wheel. There is only a click sound. All connections have been checked and are tight.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Starter Problems

Have you checked to see if you get 12v to the (S) purple wire on the starter. Could be bad connector or connections even though you say they are tight. The connection might not be crimped good.

How good is the ground wire to the motor. Clean connection. You need to take a meter and start checking voltage.

Re: Starter Problems

Voltage is all good. We even put new wires on new grounds and power to eliminate the question of having a bad connection. We just ordered a new starter so we can rule that out as well. If that doesn't fix it I dont know what it could be.

Re: Starter Problems

Does engine turn by hand?
Measure battery voltage during the START position, should not be lower than 9.5 volts.
If it is, externally charge the battery or replace it.
Battery cables are min 1 AWG?
Negative cable is on the engine block?
Very well could be the starter.

Re: Starter Problems

All, thanks fo ryour suggestions. We just replaced the starter with a new one from Summit and she cranks every time now. I guess the starter was just worn out.

Thanks again!
