2 dead batteries HelP!

Awhile back ago my car was having problems starting and it would stall often then after not starting my car for 3 days the battery was completely drained. Turned out the the alternator was shot. Bought a new one and charged the battery and everything was okay until i didn't start my car again for a couple of days and the battery was drained again. I have recently bought a good, used battery and i thought everything would be fine but again, i didn't turn my car on for a couple days and its completely dead. That's where i sit today and its been dead going on a couple of weeks now. HELP!!

Re: 2 dead batteries HelP!

Disconnect negative battery cable. Install an amp meter in line between the cable you disconnected and the battery. Read current draw. Start disconnecting accessories until reading is below 50 mA.

Ammeter or a test lamp. If aftermarket radio is installed, some current will be drawn as Daryl suggests, for clock and presets.

No mention of year, if late model with an ECM/PCM, VATS or aftermarket alarm, current will always be drawn, or test light will glow dimly.

Re: 2 dead batteries HelP!

I had this same problem on my Chevelle a couple of years ago. It wound up being an open ground. I dont remember how I found this but do a search and should find help. Good luck

FYI - 50 mA will show up as .050 A on a digital volt/ohm meter.

Re: 2 dead batteries HelP!

Since an '02, check alt again. If doing the test lamp/ammeter test, be sure you know the security number for the radio, check test equipment, then disconnect red wire on alt BATT post, then check test eqt. Could be a defective regulator.

On my '00 SS, and with a seven year old Interstate battery, after starting once every week, charging system voltage at battery is 14.8 volts, as a guide.
