I just got my 1996 Camaro Z28 SS and the service engine light soon comes on all the time. The dealer said to disconnect the battery cable. (i guess this is the dealers way to get the light to go away). I have no idea what it could be, if you could give me some idea what it could be.
It sounds like time to find a new dealer. Sure, disconnecting the battery cable will make the light go away. That is until the problem develops again.
If you have access to a code scanner, plug it in and check the code. You can pickup these scanners at most larger autoparts stores for around $30. It will come with a book of related codes and will at least give you a direction to start looking.
As Dennis suggested it could be under emmisions warranty. But then again federal emmisions warranty in Ca. is 7/70. The rest of us are 5/50. How many miles are on the car and what is the month of the warranty start date? (You may have to find a dealer to tell you the start date.)
Thanks for the help.
There are 52900 miles on the car, the guy bought it brand new in May 96 I dont know when the warrenty started. I said dealer as in a used car seller. I am going to go out and get a code scanner and i will report the results.
