I am a college student with limited funds, and my 96 SS is really worriying me..The problem I am going to describe, happends rarely(maybe once every 2 weeks)...I'll be in first gear, doesn't matter what speed, and I will hear a horrible clashing noise and it will go back into neutral..It seems like I can feel the clash right below me, or a little bit behind me..One time it happened really bad (the first time) and the brakes inoperable light came on, than I turned it off and the light went off...The car seems to drive fine, than this happends..I want to know what it could possibly be, and if it could be something that would be extremly expensive and serious..any input would be appreciated..thanks..

Since the brake inopp light came on I would guess the speed sensor glitched out.Is your car an auto trans?
