Heres my dilema.. Ive got an 89 camaro rs with the VATS system. The key will not enter the ignition all the way. the tumblers must be messed up. Its been sticking and ive needed to wiggle it around to get it in and out the last 40K. so I think it fianlly gave out on me. My question is I would like to just put a standard ignition on it hoping I could get one and a key from a yard. Do they make standard ignitions for these years that had the VATS on them? Can I just place a VATS bypass on it like those needed on remote starters? and finally in the manual it says to turn the key to the right to access the retaining screw, how the hell am i going to do that when i cant even get the key in>???? Thanks

Yes, dragon0123,
someone does know, it sounds like you need to go buy yourself another ignition lock and two more keys from the dealership or try to figure out the resistance in the pellet on your key. then go to radio shack and buy yourself a resistor of that same value and then cut the connector of the two wires under your dash (purple/yellow and black/white) then solder the resistor in place. either way
you will still have to change out your ignition lock. I don't know what manual you are looking in (haynes or chilton)but I would get rid of them and buy a set of '89 camaro service manuals from the chevrolet dealer service manager. He will have to order them and they will cost about eighty dollars depending on the dealership. You can order them from helms yourself but that will run you about two hundred dollars. If you want the information on the V.A.T. system and how to replace the ignition lock, I have this information in my set of service manuals.
Also, a new V.A.T.ignition lock and two keys will run you around one hundred dollars.

thanks trickster. I havnt got a chance to call the chevy dealer yet but I envisioned that the lock and keys would cost more than that. Ill give them a call tomarrow. If its only $100 Ill just do that. Do you know if the resistance will have to be the same then for the keys.? Is this what Ive heard of reprograming it or burning it in.? if its a different resistance Im guessing that the computer wont recognize it unless its the same resistance..??

Greeting, dragon0123,
the dealership will get the resistance value from your old key and program it into the new key when they cut it. Takes less than two minutes to do it.
