My car will never start on the first crank on a cold start no matter how long I crank it.It always starts on the second try.The electric choke seems to be set properly and works fine once started.I have tried depressing the gas pedal anywhere from three to ten times,no help.Carb is an edlebrok 4bbl,looks new,and ignition is all new hei.I'm not an auto mechanic by trade so I could be overlooking something simple. Thanks in advance.

Don't crank it for more than a few seconds at a time. Try 2 pumps and crank for the count of 3, 2 more pumps and another short crank. If it doesn't fire give it about 1/4 - 1/2 throttle, hold and crank for a short time... You really shouldn't need too. If it doesn't fire quickly and the choke is working you need a carb tune up. If it's tuned properly and you drove it within the past day or two it should cold start the first short crank...

Be sure to test for spark with a spark tester during the first crank cycle. I have seen "cold" ignition problems before.
