Hi all,

I'm a long time reader and first time poster to this excellant board. I've got a 69 Cammaro with a 396 and TH400. I get a fairly audible clunk when I put the car in drive or reverse. It does'nt make the noise when I put it in neutral, park or shifting to a higher gear. The tranny is a reverse manual body, hope i got that right. The car drives fine once in gear, no vibration etc. I've had the driveshaft balanced and the ujoints are good so I've been told.

Any ideas you guys might have to help me diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Check for warn u-joints and possibly a broken trans or engine mount.

sounds like play between the pinion gear and ring gear. Also could be some axel movement where they slide into and are cliped in the rear end. I would say that you should have a rear end shop look at it and advise.

thers a wave plate in a turbo 400 that some trans builders remove for racing that will make your trans do what your describing, call your trans man before spending $looking elswere for a problem

BTW it doesnt hurt anything just bangs when it goes in gear
