I replaced my stock starter with a new racing gear reduction starter. The old starter was noisy as compared to a new car that is very quiet.
My new starter is even louder than the stock one. Is there anything I can do to quiet down the sound?

All I have around the bottom of the fly wheel is a black plastic shroud. Is there any aftermarket full coverage shroud?

Did you properly shim the starter?

I am starting to think that I did not shim the new starter correctly.
First I installed the starter with no shims. The starter was scraping the flywheel after startup.

I then put a washer in between each bolt hole and the starter and it seemed to fix the scraping problem but I guess it is still not shimmed properly.

I am going to order a shim kit today to replace the washers and try shimming one side over the other.

The shims should be a one piece deal. They aren't really done one side at a time.

Start with the thinnest shim, and do some trial and error to get it working smoothly with the least amount of shims. I'm pretty sure you can get the shims in the HELP! section of a parts store.

Most auto parts stores do carry the shims in the help section. But sometimes you do have to use half shims or shims on only 1 of the bolt holes. I can't remember for sure but putting shims on the inside bolt moves the starter away from the flywheel and putting them on the outside bolt moves it closer. I know Autozone used to give a little metal rod with their rebuilt starters to check the proper distance.

You may have to try several different combinations to get it right.

Thanks for the good information. I do not have to much experience with starters.

I picked up a shim kit from Advanced Auto Parts and am going to shim the starter.

I also found a good web site for starter shimming at: http://www.marinemechanic.com/site/page169.html
This site also mentions the 1/8" rod/pin to properly space out the starter.
