67 RS convertible undergoing frame off restoration

I have finally put my rebuilt steering column into my 67 RS and was turning the wheels back and forth checking the turn switch cancelling mechanism. The vehicle is on blocks, making it easy to turn the wheels. Problem is, after cycling it a few times I noticed some power steering fluid had come out of the steering box at the steering input shaft. (Where the rag joint connects)

Seems like after turning the wheels without the engine on, the fluid finds its way out of the seal in this area. (Some also comes out of the top of the power steering pump cap vent.)

I know better than to turn the wheels repeatedly without the power steering pump running, but now I am wondering if this means that I have to replace the seal in the steering box, or if it is normal. If a seal is needed, I would ask how to get one and how to replace it.

Any advice would be appreciated. I will want to fix this before putting the front clip back on.

I had a similar issue with mine but it was the output shaft. After taking it apart, I realized that the new seals would not help for very long as the output shaft was scored beyond servicability. I ended up sending it out to Tom Lee at Lee Manufacturing for one of his hands-on rebuilds. He does great work out there in CA. Replaces all the balls etc. Maybe you should think about giving him a call. I would not hesitate to use him again. REALY nice feel with the rebuilt steering box.

You can get a seal kit which contains a cup type seal, a flat washer seal, and a new O ring.
Loosen the large top jamnut, unscrew the "plug" - the threaded part that houses the seal and remove it.
You can put a punch in each hole to aid unscrewing the plug.
With plug out, remove the snap ring and drive the seal out from the backside, install new seals and o rings, snap ring and re-install.
I don't have a spec for the plug tightness, but I'd just run it down lightly tight, then tighten the jam nut.
