i have a 84 berlinetta with digital dash and the pedistal radio the radio does not work at all.But the dash lights do,except when i turn on my headlights i lose everthing!!! Its kind of boring driving with the flow of traffic at night, can someone please help? I called a dealer and they said they dont even make dimmer switches afor my car anymore!!! I did find one two states away and they wanted almost $200 for this. Does this sound about right or should i look in a salvage yard for a dimmer switch?? thanks

You can test your switch with an Ohmeter. Remove it from the car and measure from prong to prong before you pay anyone a fortune for new one. A typical dimmer switch will have "on" and "variable" settings. Just measure from pin to pin until you find one that switches from open (infinity on the meter) to closed (around say 4 Ohms). The variable part should change resistance smoothly as you turn the intensity knob. Sometimes these have flat spots but that shouldn't cause your problem. the big thing you want to look for is a short from any pin to the side of the switch or if it is touching any metal under the dash. It sounds like you have a short somewhere. Good luck.

ps. If you're not comfortable testing the switch yourself, try another dealer. They should at least be able to test your switch for you whether they make it anymore or not - shouldn't cost much (if anything) if you take it out of the car for them.
