MSD ignition run on

Hello everyone;

New member, first time post. have a 68 that i just completed a new motor install with all new MSD ignition. 6al box, blaster II coil and pro billet dist. having the "engine run on" issue so i installed the diode that they recommend on the #4 wire as car still has the voltage regulator. didn't fix the problem. installed the ballast resistor on the keyed 12 volt red wire as per conversation with MSD, still didn't help. spoke with a mechanic buddy who has a couple cars and he says he went through the same thing and could never fix. suggestions? guessing go to a new alternator and turf the regulator the only solution?

Re: MSD ignition run on

So i assume u have a dizzie out of the box, dropped in with what ever specs it has and have not recurved it to suit the requirements of your engine/ car...
At any given rpms, load, mixture, dynamic compression at any given time your maxuim cycliunder pressure of the main explosion of the mixture has to be at a given piont, for your engine between 12 and 18 degs.
And manufactures advertise a plug and play marketing BS..that is like hunting rifle manufactures selling a piont and shoot rifle that will drop a running deer in a cross wind with no sights.
You need to dial in the carb idle, power and cruise circuits to good AFRs, then establish the tuning specs for the dizzie...intial , idle (intial+VA) specs, total (Cent +intial), the speed of that curve, the start vaccuum piont of the VA, the end vaccuum piont of the VA, and how many degrees in the VA.

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Is the diode in right... its like an electrical check valve....only flows one way. I did the same thing, flipped it, and all was fine.

Re: MSD ignition run on

the new motor was built and run on a dyno with the existing distributor and carb on it with a 6 al box and coil as well so the only thing new in the equation is my voltage regulator. pulled the distributor to prime the motor before first start up a couple weeks ago. set the initial timing back to 12-14 and full advance at 32 as per the engine builder so havent changed anything from the set up on the dyno. the carb was fully tuned by them on the dyno including the idel mixture set up so other than a little tweak of the idle screw to get it idling at around 1000 havent messed with the set up at all.

Re: MSD ignition run on

i am pretty sure i put the diode in correct with the little line on the diode closest to the regulator.

Diode should do the trick

Re: MSD ignition run on

Engine running on?
As a normal condition?
Then move the diode to the ign power supply wire with the line towards the ign system, opposite of ign switch. Or reverse the diode direction if the above does not work.

As in engine dieseling?
Then too much primary throttle. If engine needs to idle at a 1000 rpm, then bring in/open secondary throttle alittle for air bypass, think of a controlled vacuum leak, and turn down/close the primary throttle.

X2 If the ignition is causing the run on it's on because it's getting power to the primary side. MSDs by design need very little power.

I bought a 69 a couple years ago and the engine stayed running with the key off. the PO added a toggle switch to turn it off. I took out the toggle added the diode and that was it.

Re: MSD ignition run on

Yes it's dieseling. You may be right on the carb adjustment. Msd told me today to try a colder set of plugs?

Re: MSD ignition run on

Hey Everett,

got the dieseling fixed, was a carb tuning issue at the end of the day. reset the idle mixture screws and played with the main idle screw to bring the idle down a bit and now she doesnt want to diesel so all is good. thanks for all the feedback and thoughts guys
