Greeting gmrich,
if your ignition key has a pellet in it, I would have to say that the contacts inside your ignition lock are worn. To correct this you will need to replace your old ignition and have some new keys cut using the resistance value from the old key. Should run about $100.00 plus labor unless you are able to do it yourself. There are ways to bypass the security system, but doing that makes it easier for someone to steal your car.

Hope this helps you.

When you say "the motor won't turn over" do you mean the starter won't work or the engine cranks but won't start? The 'vats' system disables the fuel injectors from firing. It does not control the starter.

Every "Pass Key" system (VATS) I've ever worked on disables BOTH starter and injectors...

Try a search on this subject, it's been discussed quite a lot here.

The starter relay switch is a fuse like box that is behind the left kick plate. I am told you can by-pass the security. I have the same problem with my 90 z28. I'm just waiting for my husband to fix it. Anyway, if your key turns and you get power to everthing else going through the hassle of replacing the ignition will be costly & useless if you don't fix the switch.

Yes,
Like jka-ttop says and as I mentioned in my first post. There are ways to bypass the security system in your car. However, unlike jka-ttop, I would much rather go thru the hassle and expense of replacing the ignition lock and key than go thru the hassle and expense buying another car because the security system was disabled on my car and some thief drove off in it and left me hoping that the insurance company give me even a fraction of what the car was worth providing that I had full coverage insurance that covered the theft and not just liability.
sorry about the soap box oracle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. to gmrich3.
you should be getting a check engine soon light. check to see what codes are stored in the computer. If there is a problem with the vehicle anti-theft system you get a code 46. also you have not mentioned what year your car is or what size engine you have in it. This information would help us greatly in helping you.
