Question

I've developed a tapping in the #7 cylinder area down low. I can hear it in the block, but not the head or valve cover.
I'm using a piece of tubing to my ear to isolate it.tIt's a light metallic tap, jusy in that area.
Any thoughts? Lifter failing or cam lobe?

Engine is a 396 with hydraulic lifters. Don't know which cam, but it's pretty "lopey".

Thanks

joe

I know you said you couldn't hear it in the head, but maybe the rocker arms are too tight?

How old is the motor? (how many miles, i mean)

The tapping doesn't seem to be "hearable" in the head or valve cover.
The engine has < 20K miles on it, but it's been driven pretty hard! I like the sound it makes at 5500 rpm!

If it is a lifter failing, can it be replaced? Or does this require new cam, etc.

Try pulling the plug wire and see if the noise is reduced.
A wristpin/piston noise would change without load.

It could be an exhaust leak.

Thanks for the input. I'll try the spark plug thing.
I'm not sure I follow the cracked flexplate or spun bearing thoughts, tho'.

I had a big block that made a light sound like what your describing and it just happened to have been the #7 cylinder and when we tore the motor down the connecting rod had broke right at the base and the piston was at TDC(or close) and their was the lower portion of the rod still bolted on the crank. Don't think thats your problem but mine made the same light tapping noise your describing.

Now that's a broken rod! Bet it ran a bit rough.
Thanks
