ever since the rebuild on my 69 396 the oil pressure sending unit has went out 3 times in as many months. Hooked up a temporary gauge instead of the light and pressure starts out at 85 psi cold and drops down to 75psi warm, could the high volume pump be damaging the unit? when it goes out it always seems to be leaking from the seams.anyone else had this problem? thanks, Terry

that seems like a bit too much oil pressure. it could be stressing out the sender, as well as the timing chain and distributor gear with all the extra load put on the parts. if i had to guess, i'd say you are probably giving up 10-15 hp just driving the pump at that pressure compared to a more "normal" pressure like 30 psi or so at idle..

My 396 has similar oil pressure, about 80-85 cold and drops to about 65-70 warm. I never had a problem with the sending unit leaking or failing. My oil pressure might drop to 50 at idle, but goes up as soon as you touch the gas. It is more pressure than I had wanted from the melling pump. I have pulled the motor anyways, to replace it with a 454 so I don't damage the #s matching motor.

My 396 runs 75# cold, around 65 hot; drops to 30 or so at idle, hot. And my engine is getting tired.
The 69 GM manual says 80# is normal for the 396.

Thanks guys, If the new sending unit fails, I'll try a different brand. Terry

Are you sure you’re using a high volume pump and not a high-pressure pump? I washed out my bearings once upon a time using a high-pressure pump, next rebuild I switched to a high volume pump.

I know that both my big blocks have high volume pumps. Both also run rather high oil pressure, higher than a stock pump. Probably due to tight bearing clearances on newly rebuilt motors.
