Good morning camaro cats,

I recently dropped the gas tank to reattach a black wire to the fuel tank on my 67 camaro because my guage was reading 1/3 off. Please note I didnt cahnge the sending unit out because I didnt know what the problem was at this point untill i got advice from this site. I have since then and from reading the great advice from this cool site determined that my sending unit needs to be replaced. I have ordered the sending unit and it is on its way. My problem is the fact that when i re-attached the gas tank and started the car, it first was running really horrible and it even back-fired in the muffler warping one of them big time. When i asked a muffler shop what to do they said to replace the mufflers, but i feel i should wait and change the seending unit with the bad mufflers on because if i put new mufflers on it may warp them also if i drop the tank again and change the sending unit then reinstall the tank then start the car and it back-fires right? Please let me know if its possible to change the sending unit out without jacking up the mufflers thank you god bless.

Install an exhaust that doesn't go by the gas tank is the best fix I can thik of if your worrys are moving the mufflers dropping the tank. Mine dump right behind the tires. Sounds like some place your car got straight back exhaust. You don't mention the type of mufflers and if they have fiber filling for sound deadening. All I can think of that would make not replacing and pounding the mufflers into their regular non fat size is that your fiber filling might be displaced and give more back preasure than wanted. 6 of one and half a dozen of another, I'd pound/step on the muffler till back in shape. Find a dent in the lawn that fits the contour of the muffler or something. Wood to keep an even surface under the hammer or whatever it takes.

the mufflers are stock mufflers, i will replace them to make it easier, i was just wondering if every time you drop your tank then re-install the tank if your car will back fire and ruin the mufflers?

Dropping the tank, and the problem with the mufflers, are unrelated. The only reason a backfire would blow out a muffler is if it had a lot of fuel in it, and the fuel ignited. Check for a flooding problem with the carb. You may have stired up some loose dirt or rust while messing with the tank and, if you don't have a fuel filter, it could be the cause of the carb flooding problem.
