I have a Edelbrock 600 cfm carb that I installed on my 1976 camaro with a 305 sb. I set the timing to 12 degrees initial at 600rpm, and wanted to know how I could set up the idle mixture screws. What is the starting point for this. I only ask because when I slowly push on the gas, the car doesnt transition too great. If I floor it it goes , but I want good Idle performance too. Where is a safe place to start. Thanks

Usually a good place to start is 2 turns out on both screws. Check out the online manual at http://edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_intro.html for more information.

I would guess that you need a stiffer crossover/transition spring because your vacuum is so high. A silver one at that. Buy a tuning kit from Summit for your carb.

Get the calibration kit. I just solved a part throttle missfire by rejetting mine it involved different step up springs and metering rods. The speed shop I get my parts form thought it was running fine but my plugs were too clean for me. i went one stage richer and now it runs perfect. Also on the idle mixture usually they like 2.5-3.5 turns out, both need to be identical.
