Question

my 89 rs with a 2.8 v6 is not andvancing the timing when the rpms get higher. is the ignition module inside the distributor responisble for this

The computer does it.
Check the brown lead near the right side of the distributor. Make shure it's not disconnected.
When cars are smogged, the smog station will disconnect the lead to check base timing. If they don't reconnect it, or connect it badly, you won't have any, or very little advance. There is usually mention of it on the underhood sticker.

I'm assuming you are revving up the engine in park while you watch your timing mark with a timing light. I may be mistaken, but I believe some computors will not advance without the vehcle in gear. If you try it, please be very careful. By the way, what made you check, are you having a drivability problem?

GM computers WILL advance in park. The brown EST (electronic spark timing) wire must connect to the computer. For the timing to advance.
