A friend of mine has a 96 5.7 vortec engine. The engine would not start at all. Attempting to check for fire he pulled one plug wire. He forgot he had the wire off and attempted to start the car and it started and ran on 7 cylinders. When he hooked the plug wire back up it would not start. After repeated attempts to run on 8 cylinders he had to leave one wire off and drive it home on 7. The Chevy dealer put in a new distributor to fix the problem. Can anyone explain this to me?????

They should of had an explanation. I was thinking weak engine with a shorting cap. Dealers like to over do things repair wise some times to skip out on trouble shooting some times. I just wonder if he would of told them he pulled the spark plug out instead of wire would of they replaced the engine or heads
